无主句，汉语中特有的一种句型，并不是省略了主语的句子。无主句是在习惯上就那样讲、那样写的；其主语到底是谁，是什么，往往很难断定；但在任何语言环境里它都能表达完整而明确的意思。如：“这副中药要煎多长时间？”， “想吃什么，只管告诉我。”

英语里，句子一般都要有主语，没有主语是例外。汉语的无主句译成英语时，往往需要补出主语或改变句型，使句子结构符合英语语法的规范。汉语无主句的英译法大致有以下几种：

第一、运用英语的被动结构

1、某些表示事物存在、出现的无主句，可以译成被动句。

a) 献血中心将提前竣工。

The building of the Blood Donor Center will be completed ahead of time.

b) 这儿要修建一个康复中心。

A center of health rehabilitation will be built here.

2、某些表示要求、规定的无主句，也往往可以译成被动句

c) 发现了误诊，一定要改正。

Erroneous diagnoses must be righted when they are discovered.

d) 必须保证8小时睡眠。

Eight hours' sleep must be guaranteed.

第二、译成存在句，采用“There + be…”等结构

汉语中的某些格言、经验，或带有哲理的无主句，翻译时一般都采用这类结构。

e) 在初始接触致癌物到出现肿瘤之间通常有很长一段时间。

There is usually an extended period of time between the initial exposure to a carcinogen and the appearance of a neoplasm.

f) 同时由于呼气时细支气管容易萎陷，因而也阻塞气体从肺部流出。

There is also obstruction to the flow of air out of the lungs, as bronchioles tend to collapse during the act of expiration.

第三、采用倒装语序和祈使句式

g) 书架上有一本《中医基础理论》。

On the bookshelf is a Basic Theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

h) 祝您在中医事业上成功。

May you succeed in traditional Chinese medicine.

第四、选用适当的名词或代词补出主语

汉语无主句的英译，除上述几种方法外，还可以根据上下文选用适当的名词或代词（包括人称代词和否定代词）补出主语，构成一个完整的句子。

i) 不努力便不会成功。

One can never succeed without making great efforts.

j) 弄得不好就会前功尽弃。

If things are not properly handled, our labor will be totally lost. 

k) 知彼知己，百战不殆。

Know the enemy and know yourself, and you can fight a hundred battles with no danger of defeat.

l) 不经一事，不长一智。

You can’t gain knowledge without practice.  Wisdom comes from experience.

m) 没有阴阳就没有世界。

Without yin and yang nothing would exist.

第五、译为复合结构

n) 应该注意采取有效措施防止医院感染。

Attention should be paid to the effective  measures to prevent hospital from infection.

o) 要努力将人口控制在14亿以下，制止环境污染，显著改善环境。

We should strive to control the population under 1.4 billion, curb the deterioration of the environment and noticeably improve it.

p) 应该继续努力防止污染，控制污染，保护生态环境。

We should continue our efforts to prevent and control pollution and protect the ecological environment.
