在常用词sympathy和system中有两个前缀sym-和sy-，它们都是希腊前缀syn-的异体。syn-原是个希腊的介副词，意思为with (与）或together (共）。作为原生词缀，syn-只跟希腊词根相缀合，并受词根首字母的同化作用，生出syl-（出现在1前）， sym-(出现在唇辅音b，p，m前），和sy- (出现在s前）三个异体。但是，在现代英语中，syn-和sym-也作为派生词缀构成科技术语。
