The human genome project was established in 1988 with three major goals; the development of genetic maps using polymorphic markers, the generation of physical maps by cloning regions of human chromosomes, and finally determination of the complete sequence of DNA. The human genome project should enable us to learn more about the genetic basis of human diseases including polygenic disorders such as cancer. This new knowledge could lead to significant improvements in preventative medicine and suggest new strategies for diagnosis and treatment.
