2. 隐身于谓语中
这种暗含手段意义的谓语有两种：
A. 某些由“be +名词+过去分词”构成的句子谓语。其中的名词即是过去分词所表示的动作所凭借的工具或手段。再现时，可将该名词作为using或by的宾语，从而构成手段附加语。
例 15. The flotation feed material is ball mill ground to a nominal 100 mesh and conditioned at 55〜85 degrees. Ore is jaw and cone crushed to about—1 inch.《Chemical Reagents in Mineral/Processing Industry》p. 14. (=The flotation feed material is ground to a nominal 100 mesh by [with/using] a ball mill and conditioned at 55〜85 degrees. Ore is crushed to about一1 inch by [with/using] a jaw and cone.) 这种浮选给料先用球磨机磨到标准100目，然后在55〜85℉时进行调整。矿石用颚式破碎机和圆锥破砕机破碎到大约ー 1英寸。

例 16. The silicon combines with dissolved oxygen in the steel, thereby improving the quality [6]. ( = The quality of the steel is improved by combining the silicon with oxygen in the steel.) 硅与钢中溶解的氧化合，从而提髙了钢的质量。

3. 隐身于某些条件状语中。
手段是方式状语的ー种，但有时也隐身于某些条件状语中。这些条件实质上是它们所修饰的谓语动词进行动作所凭借的手段的ー种假设。一旦这些假设成立或得到满足，其动作就可以进行。

例 17. If impurities are added to semiconductor crystal when it is formed, the conductivity of a semi-conduct or material can also be increased [2]. ( = The conductivity of a ... can also be increased by adding [addition of] impurities to...) [若]在半导体晶体生成时向它加入杂质，也可以提高半导体材料的导电性。

例 18. Taken in time, the medicine will be quite effective, 《中小学外语教学》1990(1 )p34。 ( = The medicine will be quite effective by taking it in time.) [若]按时服用此药，见效会快。

4. 隐身于定语中
暗含有这种手段意义的定语通常由 1) 某些表示方法、手段的副词的相应形容词充当作为手段的工具器械，方法的名词充当。这些定语均修饰名词性动词。再现时，前者可采用副词的手段表示法，后者可采用using等现在分词的手段表示法。
例 19. Experimental determination of the magnetooptic constants of rare-earth transition metal alloys.《IEEE Transactions On Magnetics》1988, Vol-Mag. 24 p 2748. (其意义相当于：The magnetooptic constants of...are determined expermentally.) 稀土过渡合金磁光常数的实验测定。 (比较：用实验的方法测定稀土过渡合金的磁光常数。)

例 20. Theoretical analysis of video recording,《IEEE Transactions on Magnetics》1988，Vol-Mag 24 (6) , p 5249.(其意义相当于：Video recording is analysed theoretically.) 录相的理论分析（比较：从理论上分析录相。）
