我们这里所要讨论的副词的一般译法，是指英语中的普通副词的范畴，其汉译大都可以来用直译法。但有些副词的译法有其特殊性，需灵活处理。
1. “地”字法
所谓的“地”字法，就是在翻译副词时在其后面添加“地”字，尤其是翻译形容词或名词派生的表示方式的副词。如：
* The specimen is slowly loaded in tension while the load and strain are observed.
慢慢地在试件上施加拉伸载荷，同时观测载荷和应变。
* To understand better matter and energy in the natural world is the purpose of chemistry.
更好地理解自然界的物质与能量是化学研究的目的。
2.“上”和"下”字法
所谓的“上”和“下”字法，就是在翻译时在副词后面加译“上”字或“下”字， 尤其是在翻译表示程度、状況的副词时。如：
* The lymph does not circulate as the blood does, so its movement depends largely on the squeezing effect of muscle contractions.
淋巴不能像血液那样循环，其运动很大程度上依赖肌肉收缩的挤压作用。
* Morphologically and anatomically the leaf is the most variable plant organ.
在形态学上和解剖学上，叶是变化最大的植物器官。
* Typically, Ultra-Precision Diamond Grinding allows direct machining of brittle materials without the need for post polishing.
在标准情况下，超精密金刚石磨削可以直接加工脆性材料而无需随后抛光。
3.转译法
有些副词，汉译时可以转译成动词、形容词和名词。
(1)副词转译成动词
副词在英文句子中可以作表语和状语，翻译时常常可以转译成汉语的动词。
* The brake shoe mechanisms work entirely independently of the hydraulics system.
