翻译长句时，首先要弄清楚原文的句法结构，找出整个句子的中心内容及其各层意思，然后分析几层意思之间的相互逻辑关系，再按照汉语特点和表达方式，正确地译出原文的意思，不要拘泥于原文的形式。
【原文1】If you reach Chicago by train and spend only an hour or two there you will feel the light wind off the lake which gives it the name 'Windy City'.
【分析】本句中的定语从句作了相应的改变，译成了一个补充说明的分句，放在全句的后面，这样译文在汉语里的语序就正常了。
【译文】如果你乘火车抵达芝加哥，即使只在那里逗留ー两个小时，你也会感觉到从密歇根湖那边吹来的阵阵清风，这就是芝加哥之所以叫做“风之城”的缘故。
【原文2】The global economy that boomed in the 1960s, growing at an average of 5.5 percent a year, and pushed ahead at a 4.5 percent-a-year rate in the mid-1970s, simply stopped growing in 1981-1982.
【分析】本句的原文是按照年份时间的先后次序排列的，译文很自然也就按这个次序安排。
【译文】世界经济在（20世纪）60年代很繁荣，每年平均以5,5%的比率增长，到了70年代中期仍以平均每年4.5%的比率增长，但是在1981年到1982年就完全停止增长了。
【原文3】Einstein's equations indicated that when a star several times larger than the sun exhausts its nuclear fuel and collapses, its matter crushes together at its center with such force that it forms a singularity, an infinitely dense point with no dimensions and irresistible gravity.
【分析】改变语序方面最重要的就是定语语序的变化。英语中后置的定语短语和定语从句译成汉语时往往变为放在中心词的前面。本句中point的定语作了调整，如果译为“ー个密度无限大的、没有体积而具有不可抗力的引力的点”，就把“密度”与“引力”的关系拆散了。
