情态动词should的译法

英语的情态动词有很多，其往往具有自己的词义，但并不完全，也不能单独作句子的谓语，需要与动词原形连用。在此我们所讨论的仅限于科技英语中使用的情态动词should的译法。
should作情态动词用时，其句子的主语人称不限。主要用法和译法如下:
1. 表示义务、责任和必要性
should的这种用法通常可译为“应该”、“应当”、“必须”等。如：
* Such systems should include a complete monitoring system of water flow tied into the central control station.
这样的（灭火）系统还应包括ー个与中央控制站连接的完备的水流监控系统。
* It was no more than fitting that all objects in the universe should have a natural place.
宇宙中所有物体都应有其自然位置，这条原理是再恰当不过了。
* The temperature of the lead should be such that it is just enough to produce satisfactory castings in a heat-stabilized mold.
铅液的温度要正好适宜于在热稳定的模具中铸出合格铸件。
2. 表示推测，可能性
常译为“可能”、“该”。如：
* It should be completely possible for two metals to have exactly the same strength and hardness.
两种金属具有完全相同的强度和硬度是完全有可能的。
