这里的“圣人”指古代的圣贤之士。有的人将其译为saints, 我们觉得这样翻译不妥。据《现代高级英汉双解辞典》介绍，saint 的基本含义有：“1. a holy person (圣人）；2. a person who, having died, is among the blessed in Heaven (已进天国之人）；3. a person who has been declared by the Church to have won，by holy living on earth, a place in Heaven and veneration on earth (圣者， 圣徒）”。这几个含义宗教色彩都很浓，与我们中国人讲的“圣人”完全不同，面英文中的sage —词含有“a wise man，a man who is believed to be wise (智者、哲人、贤人）”之意，与我们讲的 "圣人”的含义有吻合之处，所以译文采用了 sage来翻译“圣人”。
“道”在中医典籍中有多种含义，最基本的有以下几项：
(1) 方法（method〕。如《素问•金匮真言论》中说非其人勿教，非其真勿授，是谓得道。”这里的“道”就是指的“传授方法”。这句话可译为：
The teaching method is to teach the right people the right thing.
又如《素问•玉版论要》说：“请言道之至数”，这里的 “道”指的是“诊断方法”。所以这句话可以译为：
Please tell me the diagnostic methods.
(2) 法则、规律（principle or law or rule)。例如《素问•五藏别论》中说“不知其道，愿闻其说”，这里的“道”张士聪注解为“道，理也”，即规律或法则。所以这句话可译为：
I do not know the principle (or theory)，please explain it to me (or I want to know the explanation).
(3) 指医学理论及方法（medical theory and method )。如《素问•宝命全形论》说：“道无鬼神，独来独往”，这里的“道”即指的是医学理论和方法。所以这句话可译为：
Medical theory and method have nothing to do with ghosts or gods, it develops independantly.
(4) 主张、学说（doctrine or theory) 。如《素问•六元正纪大论》说“至哉圣人之道”，即是说“圣人的学说多么伟大呀！ ”。 所以这句话可译为：
How great the sages' theory is !
当然，“道”的含义远不止这四种。不过从以上分析可以看出“道”的含义是很复杂的，有时是很难给出一个确切定义的。所以在这个译文中，我们采用了音译法将其译为Dao并附加了简要的说明以利于读者理解。
2. 其民嗜酸而食跗。(《素问•异法方宜论》）
句中的“胕”经分析当为“腐”（即发酵食物fermented food)之异。所以这句话应译为：
