Yi Fa Fang Yi Lun
(Discriminative Treating for Patients of Different Regions)
黄帝问曰：医之治病也，一病而治各不同，皆愈何也?岐伯对曰：地势使然也。故东方之域，天地之所始生也，鱼盐之地，海滨[《医心方》并作“浜海”]傍水，其民食鱼而嗜威，皆安其处，美其食，鱼者使人[《本草衍义》引无“使人”]热中，盐[按“盐”误应作“咸”]者胜血，故其民皆黑色疏理，其病皆为痈疡[《甲乙》“疡”作“肿”]，其治宜砭石，故砭石者，亦从东方来。
Yellow Emperor asked:"When the same kind of diseases are treated by different physicians with different ways, the diseases can all be cured, and what is the reason?" Qibo answered:"It is due to the different conditions of the localities.
"In the eastern district, where the weather is warm like spring time, and the district is near the sea and water. As the district is rich in producing fish and salt, the local people like to eat fish and salt, and they are accustomed to live in the district and enjoy their food. But when fish is excessively taken, it will cause the heat-evil to retain in the stomach and intestine; when salt is excessively taken, it will hurt the blood of a man. Most of the local people there are black in skin and loose in striae, and their diseases are mostly of carbuncle kind. It is suitable to treat the disease with stone therapy (to prick with stone), so, the stone therapy is transmitted from the east.
西方者，金玉之域，沙石之处，天地之所收引也。其民陵[《后汉书・西羌传》引“陵”作“山”]居而多风，水土刚强，其民不衣而褐荐，其民华食而脂肥，故邪不能伤其形体，其病[《太素》“病”下并有“皆”字]生于内，其治宜毒药，故毒药者，亦从西方来。
"In the western district of mostly desert and stone, where the gold and jade are richly produced, the weather is restraint like autumn. The inhabitants are living by the mountain and the climate is rather stubborn with wind and dust usually. The local people do not wear silk and thin cotton, but mostly in coarse cotton and straw mat. They are particular about delicious food which may cause them to become fleshy. In this case, although their bodies can hardly be hurt by the exogenous evil, but are apt to suffer from visceral illness due to food and emotions. In treating the disease, drug is necessary, thus the drug therapy is transmitted from the west.
