-ity及其异体-ty，-ety是英语中最常见的拉丁名词后缀之一，它在英语中的覆盖面与-ion不差上下。-ion主要加在动词 或动词词根上，构成名词，表示有关的行为。而只与形容词 或形容词词根相缀合，构成名词，表示具有某种特征的状态、性质或事实，其意思相当于 the condition, quality or fact of being 〜。除了与单纯形容词或词根相结合，还经常加在某些带形容词后缀的单词上。所以，常常可以看到“形容词后缀+ -ity”的复合形式，如-acity，-ality , -anity , -arity，-ability ( = -able + -ity), -ibility ( = -ible + -ity), -idity, -ility ( = -ile + -ity) , -ivity ( = -ive + -ity) , -ocity, -osity ( = -ous + -ity), 等等。-ty是-ity的特殊形式，它的构词能力要比小得多。-ety只能出现在以i结尾的拉丁词根后面。
