这第一条要求说的是，翻译者的外文水准要高，这当然是老生常谈。但是奈达在这里对译者提出的要求显然不止一般意义上的懂外文，而是精通外文。 虽然国内现在懂外文的人并不在少数，但是精通外文者，即能达到上面斜体部 分所说的那种境界的人，恐怕不会太多。要真正精通一门外文，谈何容易！没有长年的浸淫其中，没有刻苦的钻研与实践，仅凭一些快餐式的英文阅读作为“主食”，是断难“登堂”英文的，惶论“入室”其中。

2. Even more important than knowledge of the resources of the source language is a complete control of the receptor language. A certain amount of data on the source- language message can usually be secured from dictionaries, commentaries, and technical treatises, but there is no substitute for thorough mastery of tha receptor language. Certainly the most numerous and serious errors made by translators arise primarily from their lack of thorough knowledge of the receptor language.

这第二条要求强调的是，译者的译入语水平（一般指的是母语水平）也是万万不能忽视的一件事。按奈达的说法，其重要性还要超过对外语的掌握。 请注意，这里奈达用的词是 complete control of the receptor language, thorough mastery of the receptor language,即对译入语的“全盘驾驭”和“娴熟运用”。 为什么奈达要如此强调译入语的重要性？因为翻译中出现的各种毛病大多可追溯到译者的译入语欠火候这一症结。而恰恰是在这一点上，我们许多从事翻译工作（包括翻译教学工作）的人存在不甚正确的认识，以为懂外文便可做翻译，把掌握外文（且不论是否是真正掌握了外文）与能搞翻译划等号。这是 一个存在于我们社会的一个极其错误的认识。余光中先生曾说过这样一番话： “至于翻译”那就更需要高水准的中文程度了。不幸中文和中国文学的修养， 正是（中国）外文系学生普遍的弱点。我国批评文体的生硬，和翻译文体的别扭，可以说大半起因于外文这一行的食洋不化和中文不济。”他又说：“理论上说来，外文系的人凭借的是外文，可是实际上，外文出身而业翻译的人，至少有一半要靠中文。”（余光中，2002 :47)在译者母语水平的重要性这一点上， 奈达与余光中可谓英雄所见略同。对一个有志于献身翻译工作的人而言，其母语的修炼任重而道远。

3. It is one thing, however, to know a language in general and another to have a special knowledge of a particular subject. For example, one may be generally familiar with a language and still know nothing about nuclear physics or organic chemistry. Such a general knowledge is quite inadequate as a background for translating technical materials in such fields. In other words, in addition to a knowledge of the two or more languages involved in the translational process the translator must have a thorough acquaintance with the subject matter concerned.
