* There are also instances when a ship must be converted from beinq one kind of cannier to another.

3. 引导时间状语从句
(1) 表示时间，一般可译为“当……时候”、“ー……后就”、“这时”等。如：
* When pressure flattens a tube the granules are pressed closer together.
橡皮管受压变扁时，碳粒就被压得更紧密。
* This phenomenon-called superconductivity-occurred at several degrees above absolute zero, when the resistance of mercury disappeared.
这种现象称为超导性，出现在绝对零度以上几度，这时水银的电阻消失了。
(2) 英语中when引导的状语从句除了表示时间外，在特定的上下文中可以有不同的逻辑意义。汉译时，完全可以按所理解的不同逻辑意义来分別处理。如：
* When electrons can move easily from atom to atom in a material, it is a conductor.
如果ー种材料其电子能在原子间自由运动，这种材料便是导体。（表示条件）
* Why use metal when you can use plastics.
既然可以使用塑料，又何必使用金属。（表示原因）
* Newtonian kinematics is a good approximation to relativity kinematics when the speeds are small compared with the speed of light.
只要速率与光速相比是微小的，牛顿运动学就是对相对论运动学的ー个良好近似。（表示让步）
