尊敬的上海交响乐团音乐总监余隆先生，

女士们，先生们，朋友们：
大家晚上好！
欢迎大家出席今晚在中国大使馆举行的音乐会。首先，我谨对上海交响乐团艺术家们的到访表示热烈欢迎。

Good evening!
Welcome to tonight's concert at the Chinese Embassy. Let me begin by extending my warmest welcome to the musicians of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
2019年，无论对中国、中英关系还是上海交响乐团来说都是一个不平凡的年份。今年是中华人民共和国成立70周年，是中英建立代办级外交关系65周年，也是上海交响乐团成立140周年。在这个承前启后、继往开来的重要年份，举办今天的音乐会具有特殊意义，传递了三个重要信息：
2019 is a special year for China, for China-UK relationship and for Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. It marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. the 65th anniversary of the establishment of China-UK diplomatic relationship at the level of chargé d'affaires. and it is the 140th anniversary of the founding of Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
This is an important year for us to review the past and look to the future. Therefore, tonight's concert has special significance. It carries three important messages:
一是“全面发展”。新中国成立以来，坚持以人民为中心的发展思想，不断满足人民群众对美好生活的向往。中国在重视发展经济的同时，全面推进文化建设等各项事业协调发展。经过70年的努力，中国现有包括上海交响乐团在内共计1.7万个文艺表演团体，是70年前的17.1倍。这些文艺团体为不断丰富中国人民的文化生活，培育艺术情操，促进文化旅游业发展做出了重要贡献。现在，到伦敦西区看一部音乐剧、到皇家阿尔伯特音乐厅听一场音乐会，甚至到皇家歌剧院看一场歌剧或芭蕾舞，成为越来越多中国游客的必备“打卡项目”。
The first message is all-around development.
Since the founding of New China, China's development has been people-oriented and aimed at meeting people's aspiration for a better life. While building a strong economy, China has also pursued balanced development in all aspects including in the area of culture.
The number of art groups in China has increased more than 17 times in 70 years. China now has 17,000 art groups, and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is one of them. These art groups have made important contribution to enriching the Chinese people's life, cultivating their taste in art, and promoting cultural and tourism industries in China.
If you ask Chinese tourists about their trip to Britain, they will probably tell you that a musical in West End, a concert at the Royal Albert Hall, or an opera or ballet at the Royal Opera House is a definite must-see in London.
