Ambassador Chao Xiaoliang's Remarks at his Welcome Reception
尊敬的国家元首图伊马莱阿利法诺陛下，
尊敬的图伊拉埃帕总理阁下，
尊敬副元首罗帕提阁下，
尊敬的各位内阁部长和议员，
各位驻萨使节，
各位华侨华人朋友们，
各位援萨技术人员、医生、志愿者教师，
各位来宾，
女士们，先生们：
大家晚上好！欢迎大家出席我的到任招待会。首先，请允许我代表中国驻萨摩亚大使馆，并以我个人的名义，对各位的到来表示热烈的欢迎和诚挚的谢意。
女士们， 先生们，

Deputy Head of State Hon. Le mamea Ropati,
Honorable Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament,
Colleagues from Diplomatic Corps,
Chinese compatriots and Overseas Chinese,
Chinese engineers, technicians, medical team doctors and volunteer teachers,
Ladies and gentlemen,
Good evening! On behalf of the Chinese Embassy and in my own name, I wish to extend my warmest welcome to you and thank you for coming to this evening's reception.
到任以来的一个多月里，我与萨摩亚各界人士广泛接触，还参观了史蒂文森博物馆、民俗文化村和图苏瓦海洞等著名景点。有三点，让我印象深刻：
首先，是萨摩亚优美宜人的自然环境以及萨摩亚人民对自己国家的热爱。我经常能看到萨摩亚民众在清扫、除草、并采取各种行动美化和保护环境。此外，萨摩亚灿烂独特的文化和热情友好的人民，也让我倍感亲切。
I have arrived in Samoa for more than one month. Over the past one month, I met with people from different sectors of the Samoan society and visited places such as Robert Louis Stevenson Museum, Samoa Cultural Village and To Sua Trench. I got three deep impressions.
First is Samoa's beautiful natural environment and its peoples' love of their country. Every where I went, I could see people cleaning their houses, weeding the grass, taking all kinds of actions to beautify and protect their environment. The unique and splendid culture, as well as the friendly people in Samoa have also enchanted me and made me feel instantly at home in Samoa.
其次，是中萨友好交往的悠久历史，远早于1975年两国建交。我见到的不少萨摩亚人告诉我，他们的祖父是100年前来萨的中国劳工，为中萨两国的友好合作关系感到自豪。前几天我还见到一位来自德国的老华侨专程到萨摩亚来寻根问祖，这让我非常感动，没想到在萨摩亚有这么多华人后代，对中国都怀着友好的感情。
Second is the time-honored history of China-Samoa people-to-people exchanges, long before 1975 when the two countries established formal diplomatic ties. Quite a few Samoans I met told me that their grandfather or great grandfathers are Chinese indentured laborers who came here nearly 100 years ago, and that they are proud of the current friendship and cooperation between China and Samoa. A few days ago, I encountered an old Chinese man, who traveled all the way from Germany to Samoa, to find his root. All this have touched me deeply: that there are so many descendants of early Chinese in Samoa, and their friendly sentiments towards China.
第三，是中萨关系发展如此强劲有力。去年9月，图伊拉埃帕总理访问中国并出席世界经济论坛，与中国国家主席习近平和国务院总理李克强亲切会见，为中萨关系进一步发展指明了方向。11月，习近平主席同图伊拉埃帕总理以及其他太平洋岛国领导人在巴新举行了具有历史意义的会晤，一致同意将双方关系提升为相互尊重、共同发展的全面战略伙伴关系，开创全方位合作的新局面。萨摩亚也是太平洋岛国中最早加入“一带一路”合作倡议的国家之一。萨长期坚持“一个中国”政策，双方在国际和地区问题上，如气候变化等事务中也开展了良好的合作，中方对此表示高度赞赏。
Third is the robust development of China-Samoa relations. Last September, Hon. Prime Minister Tuilaepa visited China for the World Economic Forum in Tianjin and met with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang respectively. The visit was successful and fruitful, charting the course for the future development of bilateral relations. And then last November, President Xi met with Prime Minister Tuilaepa and leaders of seven other Pacific Island countries in the PNG. It is a meeting of historic significance in China-Pacific Island country relations. Both sides agreed to lift bilateral ties to comprehensive strategic partnership of mutual respect and common development, which means the beginning of all-dimensional cooperation between our two countries. Samoa is one of the first Pacific Island countries to join China's "Belt and Road" initiative by signing the Belt and Road MOU. Over the past 44 years of diplomatic relations, Samoa has firmly upheld the One China policy, and engaged in sound cooperation with China on international and regional issues such as climate change, which China highly appreciates.
