出国前办理签证，首先要求寄发申请表，填好后再正式申请。两份函件都寄给签证承办人(Visa Officer)。

例一：

亲爱的先生:

我已被耶鲁大学研究生院录取，学制两年。该校要求我在美国进行英语培训四个月后，八月份到校注册。这就意味着我应于三月启程前往贵国。

入境需要签证。请寄来签证申请表以及贵固签证的详细要求，不胜感激。

Dear Sir,

I have already been admitted to the graduate school of Yale University for two-year study and required to enroll in August after a four-month English training in U.S.A. This means I should leave for your country at the end of March.

l understand that a visa is necessary. I should be grateful if you would send me an application form with details of your visa requirements.

例二：

亲爱的先生：

兹寄上已填好的拟赴耶鲁大学学习两年的签证申请表。

我将于2000年3月30日前后从上海动身去纽约，在英语强化班学习四个月后，再赴新哈文市。

随信寄去：1. 申请表; 2.刘文先生的护照; 3.耶鲁大学1-20表复印件; 4.付签证手续费_____美元的支票一张; 5. 贴足邮票并写好地址的挂号信封一个供寄还护照用。

还需何种材料，请告知。我将遵嘱提供，十分感谢。
