中国封建社会基本是“人分五等，光成七色”，有“三教九流”各色人等（all walks of life)。常说的“上九流”，即上流社会人等，与英语中的highbrows不同。“下九流”指的是劳动者与平民百姓， 也不同于英语中lowbrows。奇怪的是商人不在“上九流”，而属于 “下九流”，可见中国封建社会商贾不兴，资本主义发展缓慢，是有 一定历史缘由的。
