“扔垃圾”可以翻译成“throw the rubbish”吗？

中文里，我们经常会说“扔垃圾”，但在英文中，表达“扔垃圾”的时候基本不太使用“throw”这个词，“throw”有“投掷；抛”的意思，你说“throw the rubbish”，老外可能会理解为你把垃圾抛上抛下，但其实中文中，它并没有这层意思，只是表达“丢掉”。

在英文中，“扔垃圾”可以这样说：

take out the trash/garbage

chuck it in the bin

put it in the trash bin

drop litter 表示“乱扔垃圾”

There will be fines for people who drop litter. 

乱扔垃圾的人将被罚款。

虽然“扔垃圾”不太使用“throw”，但“throw”的地道用法还是很多的：

Throw a party 开派对；举办宴会

Why not throw a party for your friends? 

干吗不在家里为你的朋友们搞个聚会？

Throw a fit 大发脾气

She'll throw a fit if she finds out. 

她要是发现了，一定会大发雷霆。

Throw cold water on sth 泼冷水

Everybody else in the office thought my idea was great, but the boss threw cold water on it.

办公室里所有的人都认为我的主意很好，就是老板给我泼冷水。

Throw one's hat into the ring

ring在这里指“拳击台”。在拳击比赛中，如果想挑战对方，就把自己的帽子扔到拳击场内。引申为：某人欣然迎战，接受挑战。

I think I’m going to throw my hat into the ring.

我觉得我要迎战了。
