“垃圾分类”是前年的一个热词。上海作为首发实施地，据说逼“疯”了很多小伙伴，因为单单一杯没喝完的奶茶，就要先把剩余的奶茶液体倒进下水道，再把里面的珍珠及其他辅料倒进厨余垃圾，最后把纸杯和吸管扔进其他垃圾...

今天我们就从“垃圾”说起：

英语中，rubbish，garbage，trash，litter，waste 和 refuse 都表示“垃圾，废弃物”，有什么区别？

rubbish：英式英语，指任何成堆的、破损的、用过的或无用的东西，尤指弃掉的垃圾堆。还可以用来表示没有价值的东西或者废话（非正式）。除了名词词性外，也可作动词，形容词。

You're talking a load of rubbish.

你说的是一大堆废话。

I don’t understand why everyone keeps rubbishing my idea?

我不明白为什么每个人都觉得我的想法一文不值？

He was rubbish at his job.

他的工作做得差劲极了。

garbage：美式英语，表示废物，垃圾，尤指有机废料，包括厨房的剩菜剩饭或不能再用的食物。

trash：美式英语，除了表示“废物，垃圾”外，还可用来指“不值得尊重的人”（非正式）。

waste：作为名词的时候，为正式用语 ，最常用的意思是“没有利用价值的东西，包括废品、垃圾、废物、废料”或者指“时间、金钱、精力等的浪费”。

litter：乱丢的垃圾，强调乱。

refuse：正式用语，英美均用。表示“废弃物”。

英美用法对比记忆：

Rubbish is the usual word in BrE for the things that you throw away because you no longer want or need them. Garbage and trash are both used in NAmE . Inside the home, garbage tends to mean waste food and other wet material, while trash is paper, cardboard and dry material. 

在英国英语中，rubbish为常用词，指垃圾、废物。garbage和trash均用于北美英语。生活垃圾中，garbage多指废弃的食物和其他湿物质，而trash则指废弃的纸、硬纸板和干物质。

In BrE , you put your rubbish in a dustbin in the street to be collected by the dustmen . In NAmE , your garbage and trash goes in a garbage/trash can in the street and is collected by garbage men/collectors . 

在英国英语中，垃圾为rubbish，街上的垃圾桶为dustbin，清除垃圾的工人叫dustman。在北美英语中，垃圾为garbage和trash，街上的垃圾桶为garbage/trash can，清除垃圾的工人叫garbage man/collector。

Refuse is a formal word and is used in both BrE and NAmE . Refuse collector is the formal word for a dustman or garbage collector. 

refuse为正式用语，用于英国英语和北美英语均可。refuse collector为dustman或garbage collector的正式说法。

在表示“垃圾分类”的时候，一般用的是“waste”，四类垃圾翻译为：

干垃圾：Residual Waste

湿垃圾：Household Food Waste

有害垃圾：Hazardous Waste

可回收垃圾：Recyclable Waste
