学生译文中的问题是既用了 immigrants，也用了 from other countries，构成英语中的赘语现象。在汉语中，我们区分“外来移民”(指来自国内其他地方的人）和 “外国移民”(指来自其他国家的人），但是在英语中，没有“外来移民”之说，而且 immigrants已经包含了“来自其他囯家”这ー层意思了，所以，在英语中不应该说 immigrants from other countries，单ー个immigrants就足够了。参考译文 1 改正了学生译文中的错误，并删除了赘语from other countries。参考译文2在参考译文1的基础上，进ー步精简，但意思和参考英文1相比，丝毫未减。

学生译文中的ever和for people都是多余的，删除之后，不但未损原文意义，而且与原文更为吻合。学生译文中的ever是程度副词，起加重语气的作用，加上之后， 把原文的重心由“生活水平的不断提高”转移到了“改革幵放”，而翻译最忌讳的莫过于转移原文的重心;在英语中for people的意思已经包含在living standards之中了，因此，纯属累赘，应予删除。

例4 [原文]加快城市化的步伐是进ー步深化改革的必然要求。
[学生译文] To speed up the pace of urbanisation is the necessary requirement of further deepening the reform. [16个词]

在汉语中，我们“加快”的是“城市化的步伐”，但是在英语中，我们通常不speed up或 accelerate the pace of sth.，而直接 speed up 或 accelerate sth.。此外，be necessary for包含了be the necessary sth. of。可见，瘦身后的参考译文干练了许多。
