英语的比较级是靠more than为标记的；汉语的比较则用 “比……”。其实在英汉互译中不一定在形式上追求対等。换句话说，英语的某个单词可以译为汉语的比较级，而汉语的比较级也可以译为英语的非比较级形式。
例 1
Particularly in contrast to the fact of many of my married friends in the United States who were already in the process of divorce, the positive aspects of arranged marriages appeared to me to outweigh the negatives.
【译文】特别是将他们的命运与我在美国的许多正在闹离婚的朋友作对比时，我觉得包办婚姻的好处比它的坏处多。
【评析】outweigh的基本意义为“在价值上超过”。如果直译为“包办婚姻的积极方面超过消极方面”，虽然也可以，但译成汉语的比较级也非常通顺。
例 2
He is a man who is more brave than wise.
【译文】他是个有勇无谋的人。
【评祈】如要把比较级译为“勇敢比明智多”，反而觉得拗口。
例 3
On a hot summer's day or after a race around the playground, there's nothing like drinking a cool glass of water.
【译文】在炎炎夏日，或在运动场比赛完之后，没有比喝一杯凉水更爽心的了。
【评祈】本句如果直译为“没有像喝一杯凉水ー样”，表达不出 “喝凉水是最好的”，即用最高级的意思。采用中文的比较级非常恰当地表现出了喝凉水带来的那份凉意。
例 4
The commission argues that the ability to speak two or three tongues will give the Europeans economic and technical advantages over their monolingual American rivals in a world of diversity.
