注意：位于介词except, but, besides后的宾语从句，汉译时通常要前置，可以译为ー个并列分句，用“除了”、“除……之外”、“只是”、“但”等表示。如：
* Germs can't be seen except when they are observed through a microscope.
除非用显微镜进行观察，否则就看不见细菌。
* Incoherent light is different from coherent light except that they are radiant energy.
除了它们都是辐射能之外，相干光和非相干光没有相同之处。
介词in后面的宾语从句常常被译为原因状语从句，用“在于”、“是因为”等翻译。如：
* Electron theory differs from single fluid theory in that the fluid is comparatively free to move in conductors, and is negative, not positive.
电子理论不同于简单流体理论，因为在导体中能比较自由活动的流体是负电，而不是正电。
* Of all the methods, electrostatic precipitation is unique in that the electric forces are large.
在所有的方法中，只有静电集凝法由于静电作用力大而与众不同。
