复数名词的医学翻译举例

血液的四大功能是：对身体组织提供营养，运输体内废物,协调体内化学作用和温度变化及抵抗感染。
9. The extremities are examined for evidence of edema and thrombophlebitis.
检查四肢以证实有无浮肿和血栓性静脉炎。
应该注意的是，英语中有些复数名词的含义与单数名词完全不同。如果疏忽，往往造成误译。这类名词如：time(时间），times(次数，倍数）： work(工作），works(著作）；man(人类）,men(人，男人）;spirit(精神），spirits(酒精）；good（好处）,goods(货物）;mass(块，肿块）,the masses(群众）： pain(疼痛，亦可用复数），pains(辛苦）:glass(玻痛）,glasses(眼镜)等等。举例如下：
1. The doctors spare no pains to cure the patient of his disease.
医生们不辞辛劳地治愈这个患者的疾病，
2. Mercury weighs about 13 times as much as water,
水银的重量约为水重的13倍。
注：有时一些不可的抽象名词也可用复数表示多次反复的事情。例如：
1. The patient had vomitings after the operation.
患者手术后常有呕吐。
2. In early phase of rheumatoid arthritis the disease is characterized by remissions and relapses.
类风湿关节炎的早期特征是时好时坏。
