Here, one pivotal point is to be made clear: the distinction between active operation and inventive operation. They are here both characterized by the meaning of creation. To make them clear is particularly important in literary translation, for it has always been arguments on "creation" in literary translation. When we make a distinct clarification between representation and creation from the psychological perspective, we can perhaps come to find more explicit speculation on creation in a modifying sense, while the latter, the inventive operation, is also creative operation, but in another sense - a generative sense.
By creation in a generative sense, we mean that the translator injects into the image two much of his own aesthetic experience, totally disregarding his schema not in parallel with that of the original writer. Creation in such sense influences or induces translation which is distorted, or digressive from the original. The text thus produced is nonequivalent to the semantic and even cultural sense. As for active operation in the modifying sense,we refer it to the active role played by the translator when he is faced with two diverse languages, and the different formulations of a certain image. He is to actively formulate it and represent it in another language instead of finding mechanical structures correspondent to the ST. In this process, his psychological faculties, such as imagination, association and reflection are operating consciously.
The corresponding linguistic sequence in the passive perception might recreate isolated elements. The translator is to participate actively and consciously in the reconstruction of the integrated whole by filling in the missing elements of the narrative and adjusting his perceptive schema at the same time, so as to formulate an equivalent image-G. However, this active operation does not mean that it is necessary for the translator to accommodate the target language reader by providing extra information which inventive operation in translation results in. Instead, it is to maintain the continuity of the author's representation of his experience, insuring the coherence of the poetic subject and its control over the act of self-expression.
