意译时当然也可加注，它使译文更清楚且别有情趣。如：盲人瞎马（A blind man on a blind horse — rushing ahead only to disaster)，搬起石头砸自己的脚（to drop a stone only to one's own feet _ to suffer from what oneself has done)，守株待兔(stump watching — a waste of time)。意译有时可形成一种超文化的翻译，如“目不识丁”就可简单译成be totally illiterate,也可对应译成 not to know one’s ABC，还可译成修辞性的讲法 not to know B from a battledore(a bull's foot)。
