形容词后缀-ous来自拉丁语。它可以充当派生后缀与名词结合，也可以充当原生后缀与名词性的词根相结合。的基本意义为having〜（具有…的）或full of〜（充满…的）。此外还可以表示 having the nature of 〜(有…特性的)，of ~ (…的），like ~ (像…的），practising〜(从事…的）等意义。由于拉丁构词的影 响，-ous在与词根结合时，有 -eous , - ious , - uous , -itous , - tious , -ukms等异体，这是需要留神的。

thunderous [ thunder n. 雷声；-ous→] a. like thunder 雷声似的 / The famous actor received a thunderous burst of applause at the end of the play. 戏剧结束时，那位名演员的演出获得一阵雷鸣般的掌声。
