许多学校要求外籍学生写 personal statement, applicant's statement或academic statement,常译为“自荐”、“自传”或“学习计划”，其内容主要是闸述申请人到该校就读的目的及对本专业的认识,所以有人叫它为“入学目的说明”。不过有些学校要求提供简历。下面是一篇转载自《书信英语》的学习计划：

学习计划

我打算于1987年秋季开始攻读生物化学硕士学位，研究方向是分子生物学、食品化学和天然产物。如果可能。我想兼修与食品化学有关的课程。

本科阶段我学过一门“特别项目研究”课。那年，金教授带我们做废水污染方面的研究。对鱼体内的重金属残量进行研究，分离金属硫化物，并进行了定量分析，这是一次卓有成果的经历。大学刚毕业，金教授即推荐我在生物研究所作助研至今。在该所，我参加了基因工程研究，为了从红薯基因中得到B一分析结果，我们从红薯中提取了MRNA,并把它转为二级CDNA，然后进行了离体转录和转导。我们现在正处于隔离阶段，很快就可以得到基因，其结果将在明年二、三月份确定。

这两年的实践极大地增加了我对研究工作的兴趣，因此，我想进一步深造，以便能够胜任难度更大的研究工作。

如蒙贵校录取，我计划研修下列生物化学课课程：酶化学、营养化学、植物化学和天然物产。读完硕士，我打算继续攻读博士学位，毕业后，我将立即回国为同胞效力。

ACADEMIC STATEMENT

I plan to study for a master's degree in biochemistry in the fall of 1987. Molecular Biology, Food Chemistry and Natural Product will be my emphasis. If I can choose minor subjects, I would also take courses related to food chemistry.

One of the courses taken in my undergraduate years dealt with research of special topics. That year we did research on the topic of sewage pollution with Prof. Jin. In this class, residuals of heavy metals inside the body of the fish were examined, isolated, and quantity analysed. It proves to be a fruitful experience. Upon my graduation from the university, Prof. Jin recommended me to the Institute of Biochemistry as a research assistant, where I work till now. In this Institute, I participated in research on genetic engineering. In order to obtain the B-analysis from the genes of sweet potato. MRNA was extracted from sweet potato, turned into 2nd CDNA, and then given vitro translation and transformation. We are now at the screening stage. The gene is about to be obtained. Its sequence will be decided in February or March next year.

These two years has increased my interest in research work greatly. Therefore, I plan to continue my education further, equipping myself for more difficult research work.

When admitted to your University, I want to study the following biochemical subjects: enzyme chemistry, nutrition chemistry, plant chemistry and natural product. After completing my master's program, I would like to continue studying for a doctoral degree. Then, upon its completion I will return to my country, serving my compatriots here.
