来自古法语的后缀-ory可以充当原生后缀与派生后缀。它主要与动词或动词词根相结合，它可以兼作名词后缀与形容词后缀。1)作为名词后缀，-ory主要表示 a place of ~ing (做…的场所）。有时，还表示a thing used for〜ing (作…用之物）。2)作为形容词后缀，意思较为复杂，可以表示〜ing (…行为的），characterized by〜ing (以…行为为特点的），serving or tending to〜 (有助于…的）。-ory的异体有-atory。
