fast 和 quick 均表示“快的、迅速的”。

词性上的区别为：fast 可用作形容词和副词，而 quick 仅当形容词用（副词为 quickly）。

例如：

The police car was going so fast; it must have been chasing someone. 

警车开得很快，一定是在追人。（fast 当形容词）

Allen walks very fast. 

艾伦走路很快。（fast 当副词）

He’s a quick learner.

他学东西很快。（quick 当形容词）

Mary replied very quickly. 

玛丽回复速度很快。（quickly 是 quick 的副词）

除了词性层面的区别，在含义上也有区别：
fast 尤其指“物理上的速度非常快”，如火车行驶的速度、人类跑步的速度或动物奔跑的速度等。

例如：

John’s a remarkably fast runner. 

约翰跑得非常快。

但如果你说 John’s a remarkably quick runner.（错）就不对了。

再如：

I love fast cars. 

我喜欢速度快的汽车。

你不能说 I love quick cars. （错）

Quick 是指时间短或比预期时间来得短。例如：

The manager had a quick coffee and left the office. 

经理匆忙喝完咖啡就离开了办公室。

而不能说 The manager had a fast coffee and left the office. （错）

Could you give me a quick answer? 

你能立即给我答案吗？

而不能说 Could you give me a fast answer? （错）

有时 fast 和 quick 可修饰同一个名词，意思相同，即两者为同义词；但有时两者意思不同。例如：

It’s quite a fast journey. = It’s quite a quick journey. 

都表示“这是一次很快就结束的旅程”。

He’s a fast worker. = He’s a quick worker.

都表示“他是个做事很快的人”。

但“快餐”只能说 fast food，不能说 quick food（错）。
