“剧目”，如所周知，英语作“repertoire” (亦作“repertory”）。但“repertoire”不仅指“剧目”亦指“曲目”等而言。请看ALD的注释：

repertoire /.../ n(C) all the plays, songs, pieces, etc. which a company, actor, musician, etc，is prepared to perform, etc;…

不过WNCD的注释与ALD略有不同： repertoire /…/…1:…2 a: the complete list or supply of dramas, operas, or musical works available for performance

那么，这两种词书的注释，不同在哪里呢？原来，ALD的注释中有三个“etc.”（“等等”) ——采其广义：包括“剧目”、“曲目”以及其它的什么“目”，如“片目”；而WMCD则作狭义解释， -repertoire-只作“剧目”、“曲目”而不作“片目”解。那么，“片目”英语该怎么说呢？从下例看来，“片目”似是 “cinema fare”或 “diet”了吧（当然，这主要是英国英语的用法）。请看：

...the movie theaters in the downtown area began to get new names. …Their diet also got a little richer, and typical cinema fare ranges from Romanian-produced detective stories to Western love and music.

关于电影的“片目”，《汉英词典》（北京 1978年版）没有记载。电影的“早场”一词，倒是能在《汉英词典》中査到的：“morning show”。

只是从英语原作看，“早场”还另有个名称—— “morning matinee”，如下例所示：

Saturday morning matinees start the weekend with a Minors Matinee, Junior Club or Saturday Club at more than 600 cinemas.

这“matinee”，ALD 和 WNCD的注释也不一样：

matinée/.../n: a performance of a play, music, etc.，given in the afternoon

matinee or matinée /…/ n …：a musical or dramatic performance or social or public event held in the daytime and esp. the afternoon

                                                         —WMCD

可见据ALD，“matinee”不仅是戏剧或音乐的演出，且其时间是在午后；而据WNCD则只指戏剧或音乐演出和社交活动或其它群众性活动而不及其余，而且其时间是白天而未必在午后。

不过无论如何，上例中的“morning matinee”系指“早场电影”，而不是早场演出是有案可査的了——否则怎么会说什么“at ... cinemas”呢？至于例中的 “Minors Matinee”，大概是我们的“儿童早场”了吧？对了，我们还有“早早场”呢，英语大概要说“early (或first) morning matinee”了吧。有意思的是：“matinee”按其词源的法语原义，本来就是“morning”， 如今却被用作“日场”了！这么说来，这 “morning matinee”不就是叠床架屋的“morning morning”了吗？当然，语言是社会现象，我们不能简单地用逻辑去评论它，而只能从俗 一一承认（电影）“早场”是“morning matinee”。
