译文A用了 must，似乎最贴近原文的“须”字，但主观意志很强，态度过于强硬，故欠妥。译文B用have to译“须”,传达出客观因素，比译文A改善了许多，但依然不够恳切。译文C把“须”字译为be reluctantly compelled to，以说明自己提价是被逼无奈，而非自我意愿。此句措词婉转，诚恳，易于让人接受，效果必然最好。

(2) 原文: 你方价格大大低于我方成本，我们不能按你价成交。
译文：
A. We can't entertain business at your price, since it is far below our cost. (欠妥）
B. We are unable to entertain business at your price, since it is far below our cost. (较好）
C. We are not in a positwn to entertain business at your price, since it is far below our cost. (最好）
译文A把原文中的“不能”用can't译出，口气过于强硬，有失礼貌，而译文B选用了 be unable to,增添了客观所迫之意，语气比较缓和。译文C用not in a position to译“不能”，既表现了客观所 迫，又显出诚恳的态度，故最好。

(3) 原文：相信贵方会按期发货，因迟误势必给我们造成很大不便和经济损失。
译文：
A. We believe you will see to it that the order is shipped within the stipulated time, as any delay would cause us great inconvenience and financial loss. (尚好）
B. We trust you will see to it that the order is shipped within the stipulated time， as any delay would cause us no little inconvenience and financial loss. (更好）

上句的译文有两处值得注意，第一：原文中的“相信”译作 trust比believe更好，因为trust表示的信任感更强。“I trust you”比 “I believe you”更能给对方良好的感觉。第二：“很大不便"译为 no little inconvenience, 这一双重否定短语，虽绕了个弯子，措辞却比较柔和，比直接说great inconvenience更易让对方接受。

商贸英语中的这种措辞婉转手法貌似平常，效果却很大。它折射出国际商贸领域既严格又灵活的语言规律。商海如战场是指激烈而无情的竞争，但商贸中的语言交流讲究的却是圆滑与礼节。讨伐式的或火药味十足的英语是无助于开展国际商贸的。从事商贸汉英翻译时，译者应斟酌选词，尽量把原文中的唐突、鲁莽词语译为柔和、婉转、礼貌的英语表现形式。我们应当牢记的是，商贸中婉转的英语表达比强硬的措辞更有力量。
