“associate”此词在几种英汉法律词书中的命真苦。不但在"associate judge / justice"中的"associate"被歪曲为“助理”或“陪审”，就是作为单独使用的名词"associate"也惨遭厄运——或遭摒弃，在词书中无立锥之地（《英汉法律词汇》和《英汉法学常用术语》）；或虽尚有一席之地，却被人曲解：
1. associate…...合伙人…...

为什么说曲解呢？因为"associate"与其说是“合伙人”不如说“非合伙人”。
2. Associate, an attorney who is practicing law with another attorney or a law firm, but who is not a partner or member of the firm.

在我国法学界和法律翻译实践中，associates也有被误解为“助理律师”的。这是对美国律师制度缺乏常识所致。在美国，律师考试及格者就可当律师，在律师事务所独立办案，但不是事务所老板群（大多数为合伙人、现在也有少数是公司股东）之一员。这种律师就是 associates，Associates与事务所的关系是雇佣关系——只拿工资，而不是分享利润的合伙人（或股东），但当了若干年associates之后，有可能被吸收入伙而成为合伙律师即partners：
3. For those / associates / who survived the cuts, an increasingly competitive business climate will give them fewer opportunities for partnership and for lateral moves.

上例说，在当今律师业竞争日益激烈的气氛中，那些幸而未被裁员的associates。即雇员律师被事务所吸收入伙当老板的机会少了，不能按常规升任"partners"即合伙（老板）“律师”了。
