英语中有一些名词的单数和复数形式表示不同的意义。有些名词的复数形式除具有单数的词义外，还具有新的词义。因此，利用这一点也是正确选择词义的一种手段，以下的几个例子就是这种情况。
1) Many developments in today's science and technoJogy are often involved with the development of new branches of mathematics.
当代科学技术的许多成就都与、新数学分支的创立有关。（development单数为“发展、创立”，复数为“发展结果、成就”）
2) Since Shakespeare's time the number of words in the English language has increased more than five times， from about 140,000 to somewhere between 700,000 and 800,000.
从莎士比亚时代以来，英语单诃的数目已增加了四倍多，即从十四万左右猛增到七八十万。（time单数为“时间、时代”，复数为“倍”）
3) Electronics is a branch of science that deals with the study and application of electron devices.
电子学是有关电子装置的研究和应用的一门科学。
4) Advanced electronics such as semiconductors and integrated circuits are used throughout.
现在人们处处都使用半导体和集成电路这类先进的电子装置.（electronics如在上例中表示学科，为单数，作“电子学”解；在本例中为复数，作“电子装置、电子设备” 解）

5) The amount of work is equaj to the product of the force by the distance.
功的大小等于力和距离的乘积。
6) The works were thought to be impregnable.
那个防御工事曾被认为是坚不可摧的。（work在上例中为单数，作“工作、功”解；在本例中为复数，作“工事、工程”解）此类名词在科技英语中为数不多，但如能完全掌握，也会对准确选择词义大有帮助。
