在同一个句子中，两次运用否定手段就称为双重否定。英语的双重否定形式通常由否定词no(not)等与某些表示否定意义的词连用构成，表达委婉或强调的语气。由于双重否定实质上等于肯定，所以常可把英语的双重否定句反译为汉语的肯定句，试看以下几例。
1. Nuclearradiation is not harmless to human beings and other living things.
核辐射对人和其它生物都有害。（试比较：核辐射对人和其它生物都不是无害的）
2. If houses are at rest relative to the earth surface, the earth itself is not motionless.
虽然房子相对于地球表面是静止的，但地球本身却是运动着的。（试比较：……，地球本身却不是不运动的）
3. The argument about whether there was any land on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean did not come to an end until Columbus found the new land.
直到哥伦布发现新大陆，大西洋另一侧是否存在大陆的争论才告结束。（试比较：在哥伦布发现新大陆之前，关于大西洋另一侧是否存在有大陆的争论没有结束）
4. Nothing is so beautiful but it betrays some defect on close inspection.
再漂亮的东西，只要仔细观察，也会发现某种缺陷。（试比较：没有任何东西是如此漂亮，以致在仔细观察之下也不露出某种缺陷）
5. Despiteall this, the MBT is not unchallenged in its position as the most important weapon on the modern ground battlefield.
尽管如此，主战坦克作为现代陆战中最重要武器的地位还是受到了挑战.（试比较：……，……的地位不是没有受到挑战）
6. Despitethe current oil glut, no serious observer believes that this is anything but a rapidly diminishing resource.
虽然目前石油供过于求，但任何一位认真的观察家都认为，石油是一种很快就要枯竭的资源。（试比较：虽然 ……，但任何一位认真的观察家都不认为这不是…种正在迅速枯竭的资源）
7. The current 155mm gun system have not reached the point where no further development is feasible.
现役155mm火炮系统尚需进一步改进。（试比较：…… 系统还没有达到不需进一步改进的地步）
