科技英语中有大量“动词+介词（副词）”型的动词词组，其作用相当于一个动词。这些动词词组有时具有原动词含义，有时与原含义差别极大。因此，选择这类词组的词义吋要注意。现以动词come为例作一介绍。
1) This substance we call water, and comes next only to oxygen.
这种物质我们称之为水，其重要性仅次于氧。
2) The carbon in animals comes from eating vegetation，so that all living things have a small proportion of the radio-carbon in them.
动物体内的碳来自所食用的植物，因而，所有生物体内都有少量的放射性碳。
3) Pneumonia was a fatal lung disease before antibiotics came along.
在抗菌素问世以前，肺炎曾是一种致命的肺部疾病。
4) The discovery of penicillin came about quite by accident.
青霉素的发现完全是偶然的。（译不出）
5) Copper comes between nikel and zine in atomic weight.
铜的原子量介于镍和锌之间。
6) The complaint will come before the United Nations Assembly next week.
这项控诉将于下周提交联合国大会讨论。
7) The experiment did not come off.
那次试验没有成功.
8) A bar of steel and a block of rubber come high in the list of elastic things.
在各种弹性物体中，钢带和橡胶的名次居前。
9) The seeds have not come up yet.
种子尚未发芽。
