why作为连接副词可以引导名词性从句，作为关系副词可以引导定语从句。
1. 引导名词性从句
why可以引导主语从句、表语从句和宾语从句，可译为“为什么……（的原因)”、 “为何”等。如：
* It is unknown why the polymer consists of alternate single and double bonds.
为什么这种聚合物由单双键交替构成尚不清楚。（why引导主语从句）
* Pure copper wires have very low resistance, which is why they are so much used in electric circuits.
纯铜线具有很低的电阻，这就是为什么在电路中大量使用的原因。（why引导表语从句）
* The writer presents why the three constants are related to each other.
笔者阐述了三个常数是彼此相关的原因。（why引导宾语从句）
2. 引导定语从句
why引导定语从句，修饰表示原因的名词，可译为“为什么”、“的原因”、“的缘故”等。如：
* The air resistance on an automobile is one of the reasons why fuel consumption per mile is greater at higher speeds.
空气对汽车的阻力是为什么车速较高时每英里的耗油量较大的原因之一。
* The reason why politicians are acting so swiftly on the CFC problem may be that the threat is indisputable.
政治家们在氟里昂问题上如此迅速地釆取行动的原因也许是由于它造成的威胁是不容置疑的。
