三教九流英语词汇

中国封建社会基本是“人分五等，光成七色”，有“三教九流”各色人等（all walks of life)。常说的“上九流”，即上流社会人等，与英语中的highbrows不同。“下九流”指的是劳动者与平民百姓， 也不同于英语中lowbrows。奇怪的是商人不在“上九流”，而属于 “下九流”，可见中国封建社会商贾不兴，资本主义发展缓慢，是有 一定历史缘由的。
1)上九流（Gentility)
君子 superior man；gentleman
小人 base man
大人 lord;master;Your Excellency；His Excellency
伯、仲、叔、季 sequence of siblings
史官 historiographer
女史 female official
胥史 petty official
书吏（书办）secretary
考官 examiner
主考官 chief examiner
监考官 chief invigilator
学监 proctor
太医 imperial physician/doctor
朝野 the court and the commonality
士绅 gentry
绅士 gentleman
豪绅 despotic gentry；despot landlord
