agape [ a-= on 在…；gape v. 张口=>“on gaping 正张口打呵欠”→] a. & ad. gaping; wide open 张开着；洞开着/ He stared at me with his mouth agape. 他张大嘴巴瞪着我。
astride [a-= on 在…；stride v. 跨步=>“on striding 正跨开脚步”→] a. & ad. with legs far apart 两腿分开着 / The knight sat astride on his horse. 骑士跨在马上。
asleep [a- = in 在…中；sleep v. 睡眠=>“in the condition of sleeping在睡眠状态中”→] I a. sleeping; not wake睡着；睡熟/ The cat is asleep.猫在睡。II ad . into the condition of sleeping 入睡/ The tired soldier fell asleep.那疲倦不堪的士兵睡着了。有时，a-还可以与形容词结合构成相应的派生词。
abroad [a-=on 在…；broad a. 宽的=>“on a broad side 在很远的一边”→] ad. & a . outside one's own country 在国外 / He is going abroad next year. 他打算明年出国。
aloud [ a- = in 在…中；loud a .大声的=>“in a loud way大声地”→] ad. in a loud voice so as to be heard 大声地 / The pain caused him to cry aloud.他痛得大声叫喊。
