此前缀是来自本族语的派生前缀a-，它原是古英语的一个介词，其意思相当于现代英语的on, in等。作为一个介词性的前缀，a- —般加在名词前，也可以加在能充当名词使用的某些动词之前，有时还可以加在形容词之前，所生成的派生词是句法功能相当于介词短语的形容词或副词。值得注意的是，带有a-的形容词在句子中多充当表语或后位定语。
我们先来观察几个由a-与名词构成的派生词。
afoot [a- = on 在…上；foot n. 足→] a. & ad.① on foot 徒步/ Did you come all the way afoot?你是一路步行来的吗？② in progress 在进行中/ The plan is well afoot.该计划正在顺利执行。
alive [a- = in 在…中；live ( = life) n. 生命=> “in life 在生存的状态中”→] a . having life 活的 / He wanted to see every villager alive. 他想见所有还活着的村民。
aside [a- = on 在…；side n. 旁边→] ad. on one side 在旁边 / He stood aside from the crowd, unnoticed. 他远离人群站在一旁，没有人注意他。
away [ a- = on 在…上；way n. 路=>“one's way, hence, from a place 在路上，即不在某地”→] ad. from a place离…/ The sailor went far away from home. 水手离家远航。II a . at a distance; far在外的；远离的/ His home is miles away.他的家离此地有好几英里远。
下面是几个a-与动词构成的派生词。
afloat [a- = on 在…；float v. 浮=>“on floating 还在漂浮着”→] ad. & a. ① floating; on water 浮着；漂着 / Help me get my boat afloat. 帮我把船弄下水。②on ship; at sea 在船上；在海上/ How long did you spend afloat?你过了多长的船上生活？
