百病始生/Bai Bing Shi Sheng
(The Initiation of Various Diseases)
黄帝问于岐伯日:夫百病之始生也,皆生于风雨寒暑,清湿喜怒。喜怒不节则伤脏,风雨则伤上,清湿则伤下。三部之气,所伤异类[异类:《甲乙》卷八第二作“各异”],愿闻其会。岐伯日:三部之气各不同,或起于阴,或起于阳,请言其方,喜怒不节,则伤脏,脏伤[则伤脏,脏伤:按“则伤”五字误衍,此应作“喜怒不节则病起于阴”]则病起于阴也;清湿袭虚,则病起于下;风雨袭虚,则病起于上,是谓三部。至于其淫迭,不可胜数。
Yellow Emperor asked Qibo and said:"The initiation of various diseases are all due to the wind, rain, cold, heat, coolness, wetness, overjoy and anger from inside and outside. When one's overjoy and anger are without temperance, his internal organs will be injured, when one is affected by exogenous wind and rain, the upper part of his body will be hurt, when one is affected by the wetness-cold, the lower part of his body will be hurt. Since the injuries from the upper, middle and the lower parts are different, I hope you can tell me their common reason." Qibo said: "The various energies from the three parts are different, some of them start from the arm, leg and buttock, some of them start from the face, neck, chest, back and hypochondrium, and I like to tell you their reasons. When one is joyous or angry without temperance, the disease will start from inside, when the wetness-evil invades the tendon and bone, the disease will start from the lower part, when the wind and rain invade the exterior muscle just when the patient is in debility, the disease will start from the upper part. These are the three main parts where the disease initiates. When the disease penetrates, the syndromes occurred will be uncountable."
黄帝日:余固不能数,故问先师[先师:《太素》卷二十七《邪传》作“天师”],愿卒闻其道。岐伯曰:风雨寒热,不得虚邪,不能独伤人。卒然逢疾风暴雨而不病者,盖无虚,故邪不能独伤人,此必因虚邪之风,与其身形,两虚相得[得:《甲乙》卷八第二作“搏”],乃客其形。两实相逢,众人肉坚。其中于虚邪也,因于天时,与其身形,参以虚实,大病乃成,气有定舍,因此为名、上下中外,分为三员。
Yellow Emperor said: "It is precisely because I am not able to count the diseases, so, I ask Your Excellency about it, I hope to hear the reasons in detail." Qibo said:"If one has no debilitating evil, the wind, rain, cold and heat can not injure him by themselves. Some people encounter the gale and torential rain suddenly but are not infected with any disease, it is because they have no debilitating evil, and the storm can not hurt them. In the formation of the disease, the debilitating evil and the body in debility must be existing at the same time, it is only under such situation can the evil invade the body. When the weather is normal and one's body is strong, of which the skin and muscle are usually substantial, the debilitating evil can by no means to invade the body. Whenever one is injured by the debilitating evil, the weather must be abnormal and the body must be debilitative, it is only when the evil is substantial and the body is debilitating, can the serious disease occur. The energy may dominate the superficies and the interior, and the disease is named according to the place where the evil retains. There are altogether three parts of the upper, lower, interior and exterior.
是故虚邪之中人也,始于皮肤,皮肤缓则媵理开,开则邪从毛髪入,入则抵深,深则毛娶立,毛髪立则淅然,故皮肤痛。留而不去,则传舍于络脉[脉:《甲乙》卷八第二无此字],在络之时,痛于肌肉,其痛之时息[其痛之时息:《太素》卷二十七《邪传》“时”下无“息”字],大经乃代。留而不去,传舍于经,在经之时,洒淅喜惊。留而不去,传舍于输,在输之时,六经不通,四肢则肢节痛[四肢则肢节痛:《甲乙》卷八第二作“四节即痛”],腰脊乃强,留而不去,传舍于伏冲之脉、在伏冲之时,体重身痛。留而不去,传舍于肠胃,在肠胃之时,贲响腹胀,多寒则肠鸣飧泄,食不化,多热则溏出麋[麋:张注本作“糜”]。留耳不去,传舍于肠胃之外,募原之间,留著于脉稽留而不去,息而成积,或著孙脉[《甲乙》卷八第二并作“络”]或薯络脉,或著输脉,或著于伏冲之脉,或著于膺筋,或著于肠胃之募原,上连[上连:按:“上连”当作“或著”]于缓筋,邪气淫迭,不可胜论。
"When the debilitating evil invades the human body, it commences from the skin, when the skin is loosened, the striae will open and the evil energy will penetrate from the hair, after the invasion, it reached deeply to the inner side causing the hair to stand up, when the hair stands up, the patient will be shivering with cold and has pain in the skin; when the evil energy retains and not being removed, it will transmit to the collaterals, when the evil is in the collaterals, one's muscle will be painful, when the pain ceases, the channels will be painful instead; when the evil is not removed, it will transmit to the channel, when the evil is in the channel, the patient will have chillness and startle; when the evil is not removed, it will transmit to the shu-channel (Foot Taiyang Channel), the six hand channels of the patient will be impeded, his four extremities become painful and he fails to stretch and bend the spine; when the evil is not removed, it will transmit to the hidden Chong Channel, when the evil is in the Chong Channel, the patient will feel heavy and painful in the body; when the evil is not removed, it will transmit to the intestine and stomach, when the evil is in the intestine and stomach, the patient will have the swelling of the abdomen, if he has more cold, he will have borborygmus, diarrhea and indigestion of food; when the evil is retained and not removed, it will transmit to the outside of the intestine and stomach, and between the membranes outside of the intestine and retains in the fine collaterals of the membrane; when the evil is not removed, it will retain to become abdominal mass. In a word, when the evil energy invades the body, it can retain in the minute collateral, or in the collateral, or in the channel, or in the shu-channel, or in the hidden Chong Channel, or in the tendons of the spine or arm, or in the membrane outside of the intestine and stomach, or in the penis; the evil energy can spread all over the body with many variations which can hardly be listed completely."
