The general senses are widely distributed throughout the body. These senses include pain; touch, the tactile sense; pressure; temperature; and proprioception, the awareness of body position. The special senses are localized within complex sense organs. These include the chemical senses of gustation (taste) and olfaction (smell), located in the mouth and nose, respectively; the senses of hearing and equilibrium, located in the ear; and the sense of vision, located in the eye. After a brief introduction, this chapter concentrates on the ear and the eye.
