严格地来说，翻译时对科技英语原文的内容是不允许有任何删略的。但由于英汉两种语言表达方式的不同，英语句子中有些词如果硬是要译成汉语，反而会使得译文晦涩难懂；如果不译出来，则会使译文更能通顺、准确地表达出原文的思想内容。因此，掌握省译的方法也很有必要。一般来讲，省译主要体现在以下几个方面。
1. 省译冠词
英语中有冠词，而汉语中没有冠词，因此，汉译时常常可以省去不译。如：
a. A photon of solar energy excites a chlorophyll molecule within a plant cell's chloroplast, causing it to give off an electron.
太阳能的光子激发植物细胞叶绿体内的叶绿素分子，使它释放出电子。（省译了四个不定冠词）
b. Small doses of toxins induce a host to manufacture anti-toxins.
小剂量的毒素能使受体产生抗毒素。（省译了 a)
c. Although the polyacetylene film shone like silver, it was not an electrical conductor.
尽管聚乙炔膜向白银一样闪亮，但是它并不是导体。（省译了 the和an)
2. 省译代词
英语的特点之一就是代词多，但译成汉语时，无须保留全部代词，可以根据情況省译ー些。如：
e. If you reduce the volume which a gas occupies to one-third, then the pressure increases three times.
如果把气体所占的体积压缩到1/3，那么压力便会增至3倍。（省译了人称代词you)
f. One material can be distinguished from another by their physical properties.
根据物理性质，可以把一种材料与另一种材料区分开来。（省译了物主代词their)
g. From then on, as electricity was consumed, the meter would either reverse itself or stop entirely.
从那时起，用电时电表不是逆转就是完全停转。（省译了反身代词itself)
