派生后缀-wise来自古英语名词wise (方法、方式），它可以加在形容词、名词或动词后面构成方式副词，表示ina 〜manner 或in a〜ing manner (以…的方式）;like a〜(像…的）;in the direction of〜(朝…的方向）;in the〜respect (在…的方面)等意思。在现代英语中，-wise的最后一种含义用得比较多，并因此变成相当活跃的能产型词缀，这时它往往通过连字符加缀在名词上。下面是几个有代表性的例子。
likewise [like a. 相同的；-wise=>“in a like manner 以相同的方式”→]ad. similiarly 同样地，照样地 / See what I do. Now you do likewise.看我怎样做，然后你照着做。
otherwise [other a. 其他的；-wise=>] ad. ① in the other respects 在其他方面 / He is noisy, but otherwise a nice boy. 这孩子爱吵闹，其他方面倒很好。②in a different way另外，别样/ I could not do otherwise.我无法另行其事。
slantwise [ slant v. 斜；-wise→] ad. in a slanting manner; obliquely 倾斜地；歪斜地 / A crab scuttles slantwise. 一只蟹很快地斜行而过。
clockwise [clock n. 钟;-wise=>“like a clock working 像钟在运行一样”→]ad. in the direction in which the hands of a clock move 顺时针方向 / You must turn the key clockwise to unlock the door. 你要将钥匙向顺时针方向转动才能打开门。
lengthwise [length n. 长度；-wise→] ad. in the direction of the length纵长地/ She cut the cloth lengthwise. 她顺着纵向把那块布剪开。
figure-wise [ figure n. 数字；-wise=>“in the respect of figures 在数字方面”→]ad. as far as figures are concerned 就数字而言 / The trouble wasn't all that serious, figure-wise. 从数字方面来看，问题没有那么严重。
