在所有的前缀中，un-也许是读者们最熟悉的。这不奇怪，因为un-是个使用率最高的表示否定的活性前缀。国外有人做过试验，不管什么单词，加上一个un-，对方都能理解你所要表示的否定意思。un-是英语中土生土长的，其原形就是古英语中的 un-(on-)，基本义为not (不）。它可以加在形容词和副词前面， 意为not (不，未，非）；它也能与名词结合，表示lack of (无）；有时，un-还可以与动词结合，表示to undo (取消）。在上述情况下，un-都不影响单词的词性。但特别值得注意的是，可以作为动词性前缀与名词结合生成动词，表示to remove (取走），to free from (解脱)或 to deprive of (剥夺)之意。
先介绍几个有代表性的以un-开头的形容词、副词、名词和动词。其中un-均不影响词基单词的词性。
unable [ un- = not 不；able a. 会的→]a. not able; lacking ability or power to 不会的；无能力的/ A little baby is unable to walk or talk. 初生婴孩不会走路不会说话。
unconscious [ un- = not 不；conscious a. 自觉的；清醒的→]a. ① not conscious; not aware 不知道的；未发觉的 / The general was unconscious of being followed by the spy. 将军没发觉自己被间谍盯了梢。② not in a conscious state; not able to feel or think 不省人事的，失去知觉的/ He was knocked unconscious by the car. 他被汽车撞昏过去了。
unknown [ un- = not 未；known a. 已知的→ ] a. not known; not familiar, strange 未知的；陌生的 / They explored the unknown country beyond the western frontier. 他们越过西部边境到那无人所知的国度探险。
unwilling [ un- = not 不；willing a. 愿意的，乐意的→ ] n. not willing; not consenting 不愿意的；不情愿的 / He accepted the unwilling appology of his opponent. 他接受了对手的言不由衷的道歉。
