前缀ultra-来自拉丁介词ultra，意思为beyond (在…以外）。在现代英语中，被用来充当派生前缀与名词或形容词相结合，其意思除了 beyond之外，还引申为excessively (极度地）等。与名词结合，可能改变词基单词的词性生成形容词。顺便指出，在意思上与前缀和很相似，但它的构词能力却小得多，而且它一般只与单词缀合。
