这里要介绍的前缀Post-与“邮政”一点关系也没有，它原是一个拉丁介副词，意思为after或behind (后，次）。作为原生前缀，它一般与拉丁词根结合构成表示时间或次序的原生词。但现在它也可作为派生前缀与单词结合，有时后接连字符号。当 post-作为介词性前缀与名词结合时，可能改变词基单词的词性， 生成形容词。
先观察post-与词根缀合的几个词例。
postbellum [ post- = after 后;bellum = war 战争→]a. after the war, especially the American Civil War 战后的；美国南北战争后的 / The cowboy migrations westward were a postbellum phenomenon. 牧民向西迁移是战后的现象。
posthumous [ post- = after 后; hum = earth or grave 土，墓；-ous a. = being=>“after one being in the grave 某人入土之后的”→] a. happening after death 死后的，身后的 / This posthumous book collected all of his poems. 这本身后出版的书收集了他的全部诗歌。

postpone [ post- = after 后; pon = to put 放;-e=>“to put after a fixed time 放在原定时间之后”→]v. put off to a later time; delay 延迟，延缓,The ball game was postponed because of rain. 球赛因雨推迟。
