other和another的译法

1. other的译法
other表示“(两个中的）另ー个或另ー些”，相当于名词或形容词，在句子中作主语、宾语、定语等。相当于名词时，有复数形式others。
(1) other作定语的译法
other作定语时，常与复数名词连用，可译为“其他”。如：
* These compressors have proved themselves useful in a variety of ways in installations where large volumes of air or other gases are compressed.
这些压缩机对压缩大容量空气或其他气体的设备来说，在许多方面证明是实用的。
* He has proved time and time again that the radiation is different from all other known radiations.
他已一再证明这种辐射和其他任何已知的辐射都不一样。
(2) other作主语或宾语的译法
other作主语或作宾语时，单数之前常用定冠词the，表示两个中的另ー个，可译为“另一”。复数之前一般不加定冠词the，常译为“另ー些”。如：
* If one generator is out of order, the other will produce electricity instead.
如果一台发电机发生故障，另一台便代替它发电。
* Some oil wells produce nothing but salt water, while others always remain dry.
有些油井只产盐水，而另ー些油井却总是干的。
