立冬是季节类节气，表示自此进入了冬季。立，建始也；冬，终也，万物收藏也。立冬，意味着生气开始闭蓄，万物进入休养、收藏状态。其气候也由秋季少雨干燥向阴雨寒冻的冬季气候转变。

Beginning of Winter is the nineteenth solar term. Beginning, means the season begins from then on. Hence, Beginning of Winter is seen as the arrival of winter. It is not the beginning of winter in terms of meteorology. The climate every year is different, so the beginning of winter could be quite different. And with the vast territory of China, the winter in every area doesn't begin at the same time.Beginnings of winter, spring, summer, and autumn are known as the "Four Beginnings". They were important festivals in the ancient, farming-dominated society. Before the day of Beginning of Winter, the ancient emperor would take a shower and have no more meat. On that day, he would lead his officials to the suburbs and perform the ceremony of "welcoming the winter.".The Northern part of China celebrates Beginning of Winter as the “Small Spring Festival”, an occasion for a dumpling feast. In the north, there goes a saying, “Eating dumplings when the winter begins helps one better resist the upcoming bitter cold”.
