同词反义对翻译很有关系,稍不注意就会把意思译反了。
比如说,“cult”这个词就反映着同词反义现象——既可作“崇拜的主体”即“崇拜者”解,亦可作“崇拜的客体”即“被崇拜者”解。 请先看词书的释义:
1. cult (.…),n. 1. . . 2 . great admiration for a person, thing, or idea; worship: a cult of Napoleon grew up after his death ( H. G. Wells). syn; devotion, homage , 3. a group showing such admiration; worshippers. 4. the object of such admiration: The films of Charlie Chaplin have become cult among mariy moviegoers.

如果承认“主”与“客”互为反义,就不能不承认cult 乃同(一个)词而(可有相)反(的涵)义——“被崇拜者”与“崇拜者(群)”。因此,翻译中得根据上下文判定具体的“cult”究竟用于正义还是反义。比如说,遇到英语 "his/her cult”就要判定在上下文中的具体涵义而分别译作“他(她)所崇拜的人”或“她(他)的崇拜者群”。
又如不及物动词“dust”也是同词反义——“除尘”或“积(沾)尘”:

可惜,这一同词反义现象在两本兄弟词典——《英华》和《新英汉》——中都没有反映出来。
还有一个词,它也反映出同词反义现象。请看:

因此,在上下文中遇到“big deal”一词就得注意了:究竟该译成,比如说,“大事”呢还是“小事”。其区别的标准在于作者或说话人的语气——是否“sarcastically”地的。
这最后一点,可以说是同词反义现象的总规律之一。这在笔者来说,认为是个新发现:同一词语用于讽剌时也发生同词反义现象——英汉皆然。在口头,则语气语调更是判定是否语出讽刺从而用于反义的一个指示器,比如,拿汉语来说,“谢谢”既可以是肯定的(表示领情)也可以是否定的(表示不领情)——在口头就令取决于有无讽刺的语气语调。同词反义是一个有趣的语义现象,但在翻译中对此稍不注意就要自讨没趣了。
