英语句型的核心是SV(主谓)结构。它就像树干，在此基础上又滋生出支干和树叶。这种句法结构决定了英语句子的组句顺序。下面四类例子中，句法规则使得句子的信息焦点分别出现在定语、状语和主语的位置。

而汉语句子不是严格的主谓结构。比起英语，其信息更多地依照自然的逻辑顺序排列。下面的四类例句在翻译成汉语吋，信息焦点要么放在相当于谓语的位置， 要么单独成句，从而有效地强调了信息焦点。
