科技英语文章中，常有两个同义词连用的现象，即对同一概念用两个词重复表达。这两个同义词中的前一个往往是专业词汇，而后一个往往是普通词汇。两者在语法上系同位关系，常可用连词or连接。作者这样作，往往是出于强调或为了适应不同层次读者的需要。但在译成汉语时，为了使概念准确，免于文字重复或含糊不清，却只需要译出其中一个、即译成汉语中通用的一个名称就可以了。请看以下各例：

1. Artillery or gun systems have been and will continue to be a major component of both ground and naval weapons systems.

火炮系统过去是、今后仍将是陆海军武器系统的一个主要组成部分。

2. We are accustomed to calculating in a 'denary' or decimal system, probably because we have ten fingers.

我们习惯于十进制运算，这可能是因为我们有十个手指的缘故。

3. Small doses usually produce a mildly sedative, calming effect on the highest brain centres.

小剂量通常可对高级脑中枢产生轻微的镇静作用。

4. The surface grinder is a machine for finishing flat or ytUtne surface of a work.

平面磨床是对工件平面进行精加工的机床。

5. ATGMs are an exceptionally effective and efficient way to counter the MBT.

反坦克导弹是对付主战坦克的极其有效的武器。

6. The force of gravity acts vertically downwards and gives an object weight or heaviness.

重力的作用是垂直向下的，因而物体具有重量。

7. The ability to make a freehand drawing or sketch is an essential skill for every engineer.

随手作图的能力乃是每一位工程师所必须的技能。

8. Bacteria capable of causing disease are known as pathogenic, or disease-producing.

可引起疾病的细菌称为致病菌。

9. Look through the ocular to check to see if the circular view field appears bright. A partially obscured field indicates poor or loose connection.

请通过目镜检查环形视野中是否有亮光。如视野中有局部灰暗，则表明连接不良。
